Britten's Serenade, in all but name a love letter from Britten to his life partner Peter Pears, explores iconic poetry on the subject of sleep by Tennyson, Blake, Johnson and Keats.
It forms the central piece in this concert which also features Mendelssohn's early, sprightly overture based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and is complemented by Brahms' sunny second symphony.
