Lunchtime Recital: Katharine Dryden, Andrew Chadwick, & David Machell

  • Sheffield Cathedral Church Street Sheffield S1 1HA (map)

We invite musicians from near and far to share their musical talent with us. All are welcome!

Katharine is a professional singer, she began having singing lessons at the age of 14 and went on to study for 7 years with world-famous mezzo-soprano Constance Shacklock. She is Ø  great lover of German Lieder and art song, she also specialises in 1920s, 1930s,and 1940s song, where she sings in the persona of “Kitty Mai – the voice of the nightingale.” She is an English Heritage accredited artist and often appears as a guest solo artist for music ensembles and choirs, most recently for Treorchy Male Choir and Carlton Male Voice Choir.

Andrew is a Yorkshire-born sandgrown'un who studied violin with William Rees and then viola with Frederick Riddle while playing in the National Youth Orchestra of GB. While studying at Oxford he was coached by the Allegri String Quartet and performing in the Holywell Music Room. More recent lessons from Roger Coull and members of the Martinu String Quartet have kept his fingers moving! Andrew is also a regular player with Helix Ensemble, Contemporary Music for All and the Southwell String Quartet.

Award-winning and widely published composer, David has written for musical groups of all descriptions from an early age. Singing in a local Church Choir under an inspiring choir leader led to a Choral Scholarship at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, and from there to being Head of Music at Nottingham Girls’ High School, where he wrote for all occasions. Recent commissions from the Lincoln Youth Choir, the Nottingham Bach Society and the Nottingham Symphony Orchestra Choir sit beside his work for violist/violinist Andrew Chadwick (“Autumn” Sonata for viola, “Tango in A minor” for violin), and mezzo-soprano Katharine Dryden (“Domine Deus”).

David and Katharine run a highly successful concert series at St Mary’s Lowdham, one of which established the Trio heard in this recital.
