Solace Angel Wings

  • Sheffield Cathedral Church Street Sheffield S1 1HA (map)

A three metre high installation for all of Sheffield to become an angel.

The angel wing installation is made up of 110 glass feathers, individually sculpted in clear glass with fine cane work inclusions by leading glass artist Layne Rowe. Each feather is hung from the bone of the wings forged in metal by Ryan Harms. Their craftmanship forms the three meter high glass angel wings which serve as a symbol of freedom, unity and strength.

Layne Rowe gained his inspiration for the piece from - "A fascination and love for birds which started early in my life, when experiencing the release of trained pigeons. Seeing these birds take flight has stayed with me since childhood. For centuries the power of flight has influenced mythological creatures such as Pegasus and Angels. These glass wings are a symbol of freedom, unity, strength and power, yet providing a sense of humility."

The wings will be on display throughout September and into November where members of the public will be able to take photos with the wings to emulate an angel. There will also be individual feathers to purchase from the Cathedral gift shop.
