Amy's Story

Volunteering at Sheffield Cathedral was an invaluable experience which afforded me with opportunities to not only develop my communication skills but also organisation skills and ability to work in a team from a variety of backgrounds. The opportunity to complete one of my University modules, work-based placements, at the Cathedral was fantastic and this contributed to my long term goal of working in Education.

Sheffield Cathedral is a unique place to volunteer in as it is a place of multiple identities. For some, it is first and foremost a place of worship, a space to celebrate and commemorate the key moments in a person's life, while for others it is a space to be educated about the history of Sheffield.

Alternatively, it is a space to celebrate someone's achievements at graduation or even a space to enjoy the delights of a concert, an art exhibition or an event. Whatever identity the Cathedral is taking in any particular moment, and it is probably taking more than one at once, your volunteering experience is varied, enjoyable and there is never a dull moment!

I still recount my experiences at Sheffield Cathedral in recent job applications and interviews. It was particularly prevalent in my most recent interview where I was successful in securing my dream job as Teacher of English to young people with additional needs. The experience I had at Sheffield Cathedral truly has contributed to where I am today and hope to be in the future and will be a time which I will never forget!
