Day 6 - A Mountaintop Experience at Mount Tabor

Truly a mountain top experience today as we journeyed to the summit of Mount Tabor the location of the Transfiguration of Christ. Jesus took Peter, James and John to the mountain top and they witnessed Jesus appearance change with the glory of God. His facial appearance changed and his clothes became dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with Christ.

Gods voice was heard to proclaim, ‘This is my son, my chosen; listen to him!’ You can read the event in Luke’s gospel chapter 9 verses 28-36.

The astonishingly beautiful church built here and the scenery across the valley below certainly added a glory. I sat in the excavated ruins of one of early churches built on the site and understand a small part of why Peter said to Jesus, ‘Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings...’ He wanted to stay and hold the moment of glory.

The sense of peace inside the church and the glory of the natural beauty outside seemed to shut out the every day stresses and strains of life. Wouldn’t it be nice to live on this mountain top and hold the experience for the foreseeable future?

However, my life pilgrimage is lived out at a lower altitude. The wonder is that God’s Glory is not reserved for the mountain top alone but Jesus goes with us and calls us to reflect the glory of God day by day.

Canon Keith and The Dean’s pilgrimage to The Holy Land is in preparation for a Sheffield Cathedral Pilgrimage open to members of the congregation taking place in 2021. Would you like more details? Please send Canon Keith an email.
