Chapter opened with prayer and the Collect for All Saints Day.
Chapter minutes, action log and matters arising from their previous meeting were cleared.
Keen to hear more about the work of the various departments, the Acting Dean warmly welcomed our Assistant Director of Music to Chapter. Members discussed the Choral Services Programme September to January. In addition to Sunday services, their recent, impressive schedule included the Master Cutler Installation 5/10, a Memorial Service for South Yorkshire Police 9/10, The Royal School of Church Music Day 16/10 and Evensong with Thanksgiving for the work of the South Yorkshire Lieutenancy 29/10. Chapter commended the team on the wonderful quality of their music. Chapter also discussed whether fundraising may be possible to acquire a cabinet organ, in due course, to provide for more flexible rehearsal and conducting.
Chapter received the monthly safeguarding report and noted progress on the Diocesan Past Cases Review work. Chapter were informed that our Cathedral Safeguarding adviser has been successful in securing a new role on promotion when her current contract ends with us. Chapter gave thanks for her contribution. Chapter will look to align Safeguarding work with the Diocese from the new year.
Our Treasurer provided a detailed and comprehensive financial update addressing management accounts, variance reporting, cashflow, balance sheet items and budget 2022 planning and timetable. The strategic risk register was also shared.
The Acting Dean’s valedictory report to Chapter was very well received. Chapter gave thanks and paid tribute to Geoffrey’s work and service to the Cathedral in the past year as Acting Dean and in anticipation of his new role as Interim Canon Precentor.
The Vice Dean, interim COO and Departmental reports - and all the work they represent, were received and greatly appreciated. Chapter discussions considered the wide range of topics addressed from Cathedral Communications - in anticipation of the refreshed Communications strategy at a future meeting; clergy housing requirements; priorities for future grant funding; and, our readiness and preparations for the Installation of the new Dean of Sheffield on Saturday 6 November.
Chapter closed the meeting with a formal vote of thanks for the dedication and service of Revd Canon Geoffrey Harbord as our Acting Dean and Chair of Chapter since October 2020.
