Membership
Neil Riley was welcomed to his first Chapter meeting as the newly appointed Senior Non-Executive Member (SNEM). Also in attendance was Frances Johnston the new Executive Assistant to the Dean and Clive England (Cathedral Architect) who was giving his annual report to Chapter.
Cathedral Architect Report
Clive England talked Chapter through his annual report and highlighted the work that is outstanding on the cathedral’s inventory and on some areas of the previous quinquennial inspection from 2019. Chapter discussed in detail the North Boundary Wall and the advice needed as to what work might need doing and whether it is the responsibility of the Cathedral or the City Council. A report on the condition of the roof was given and Clive outlined the work he has done to date on reviewing office space for Cathedral staff.
Finance
The Cathedral Treasurer provided Chapter with a detailed review if the financial position of the Cathedral for 2023. This included a report on the Chapter and Enterprise accounts which were reviewed by the board.
Cathedrals Measure
Chapter were updated as to the current status which is that the Cathedral is now operating under new Constitution and Statutes and certificate date 2 is the 12 April 2024. Chapter discussed the need to now work quickly to identify the membership of the Nominations Committee who need to be able work with haste to recruit effectively to vacant committee positions.
Recruitment
Dean Abi summarised for Chapter the current vacancies in the Cathedral and talked through two clergy vacancies for Chapter to consider. Chapter agreed to the creation of a Minor Canon Precentor Role and supported the need to recruit a second Residentiary Canon following Geoffrey’s retirement in August 2024.
Clergy Housing
Chapter were informed that valuations for current Residentiary Canon house were taking place and it was confirmed that the offer made for the replacement house had been accepted.
Chief Operating Officers Report
Jason Carr talked Chapter through the shared report and highlighted the date of the upcoming Silent Disco, noting to Chapter that there had been some negative press about these events being held in other Cathedrals. Chapter were reminded that we had previously hosted a very successful Silent Disco in 2023 and it was agreed that there were no concerns with continuing with such events in Sheffield Cathedral so long as they are well managed.
