Introducing our New Minor Canon Precentor

We are delighted to announce Daniel Wyman will be joining the Cathedral as Minor Canon Precentor from October.

Daniel grew up in Northampton, where he was a chorister and choral scholar at All Saints’ Church. He went on to study music at Birmingham Conservatoire, where he received a Bachelor of Music in“Vocal and Operatic Studies. His studies coincided with his discernment of his vocation to ordained ministry and also introduced him to poetry, fine art, drama and foreign language.

After his time in Birmingham, Daniel spent two years at St John the Divine, Kennington, as a pastoral assistant while discerning his vocation to the priesthood with Southwark Diocese. Here, he fully embraced his identity as a catholic Anglican, celebrating the diversity and radical missional work that is the inheritance of that church.

Whilst at St John’s, Daniel assisted in the earliest years of the boys, girls and teenage choirs. The choirs, as much as being about musical education and the formation of young people, were also about the relationship with the community. Daniel saw and participated in building trust between the community and the church and observed clergy acting out and enabling an effective and glorious vision of the Gospel life.

Daniel trained for the priesthood at the College of the Resurrection (CoR), Mirfield, and studied for his BA in Theology at the University of Sheffield. The college is on the grounds of the Community of the Resurrection (CR), an Anglican community of brothers formed in the “Benedictine round of worship, ministry and hospitality.” Those three aspects of the monastic life lived out by the CR have enormously shaped Daniel’s ministry and life. Daniel was Kapellmeister for the College and assisted in the music and liturgy of the Community, too. Daniel also audited the Masters in Liturgy.

Daniel is married to Caroline, also a priest, and they have a 2 year old son.

Regarding the appointment of a new Minor Canon Precentor at the cathedral, the Very Revd Abi Thompson, Dean of Sheffield said: ‘I’m delighted that Daniel will be coming to join our growing team at Sheffield Cathedral. He brings with him enormous musical skill, and the warmth of his personality and ability to engage with people was clearly evident at his interview. We’re looking forward to welcoming him and his family in October.’
