The Manger brings joy, wonder and light to thousands

We are once again opening our doors to welcome thousands of visitors for our annual light show.

Sheffield Cathedral Illuminated: The Manger is running for six nights from Tuesday 29 November to Sunday 4 December. This will be the third Christmas lightshow at the Cathedral. Previous shows in 2019 (The Angels are Coming) and 2021 (The Beginning) mesmerized more than 20,000 children and adults. The event has quickly become a Christmas tradition for Sheffield and we are gearing up to welcome thousands more people again this year.

“A stunning light show at Sheffield Cathedral. Full of joy and wonder. It really put me in the festive
spirit”
— Visitor of 'The Beginning' 2021

The Very Reverend Abi Thompson, Dean of Sheffield said “It’s been a difficult and challenging year in so many ways, but Christmas is a time to look forward to. It’s also a special time of year for people and families to come together and celebrate. Christmas is a time of joy, wonder and light so we want to share the Christmas story and invite everyone to come along and see the Cathedral transformed by light and sound and to start their Christmas celebrations with us.”

The captivating show will light up the Cathedral inside and out. The Manger is a creative take on the Nativity story through imaginative use of light and sound, timed to coincide with the start of Advent. Digital art will be projected onto the exterior walls of the Cathedral while the whole display is accompanied by an original score of uplifting music.

Once inside, you’re invited to take as much time as you like to enjoy the ancient architecture of the building being transformed through colourful projections. The Cathedral will also sparkle with 40 Christmas trees beautifully decorated by local businesses, charities and community groups.

One of these trees will be decorated by our sponsors, Sheffield’s Utilita Energy Hub. Callum Slavin, manager of the Hub in St James Row, said: “We work very closely with the Cathedral, which is just over the road from our Hub, and see all the good it does for the community. The team are an inspiration for us at Utilita, as we don’t just want to be in the city’s community - we strive to be a part of it. That’s why we are always on hand to talk to residents about their energy bills, and our 15 Ways to Save campaign has gone down really well in Sheffield. I’m really looking forward to this year’s event and I’m sure I’ll see lots of familiar faces.”

The Manger is created by award-winning digital art specialists Luxmuralis, who promise a spectacular experience for the whole family to enjoy and the perfect way to start looking forward to Christmas. Peter Walker, artistic director of Luxmuralis said: “We are delighted to return to Sheffield for our third Christmas show at the Cathedral. For many the illuminations have become a tradition for Sheffield, bringing people of all ages and all backgrounds together in the heart of the city. The Manger is a beautiful production which we are sure will get people in the mood for Christmas celebrations this year.”

Tickets are still available to see this year’s spectacular light show, so wrap up warm and get in the festive spirit!
