Sheffield Cathedral is ‘A Place for All People’ and our Duty Chaplains represent the pastoral and spiritual life of the Cathedral, and contribute significantly to the ministry of welcome and hospitality. The Chaplain is a prayerful presence in the Cathedral and their visible presence is an important witness to its mission.
We are now seeking to expand the team and are inviting enquiries from those who are in recognised/authorised ministry, both lay and ordained, including ecumenical partners. As well as those who already have appropriate skills and experience, we would also like to hear from people who are interested in exploring/developing a ministry in chaplaincy.
As a Chaplain you will:
make every visitor feel valued and welcome;
be visible and available, and actively engage with visitors in all parts of the Cathedral;
offer pastoral care, when requested;
offer hospitality to the distressed, through listening, prayer, lighting of a candle;
and be available for at least one three-hour duty each month.
The time commitment is negotiable – please get in touch if you wish to discuss this further.
Through this expansion, the Cathedral’s Chaplaincy Team aims to reflect the breadth and diversity of the wider Diocese of Sheffield, and of other churches across South Yorkshire. We hope that this will provide an opportunity to increase the range of skills and experiences within our team, as well as developing and strengthening links between the Cathedral and both the wider Diocesan family, and our ecumenical partners. We would therefore encourage anyone with an interest in Chaplaincy Ministry to get in touch.
We would like to invite you to one of two sessions exploring chaplaincy: Thursday 16th January, 2pm-4pm or Saturday 1st February, 12noon-2pm.
It is a chance to meet other Chaplains, hear about chaplaincy at the Cathedral, and ask any questions you may have. There is no expectation that you apply to become a Chaplain after attending a session. To register your interest in one of these sessions please click here.
If you wish to apply to become one of our Chaplains, or if you have further questions, please get in touch with Ian Owers or Ann Walton, who oversee the Chaplaincy Team.
