Chapter Meeting Update: September 2023

Matters Arising

A date for Stewardship Sunday was agreed the need to update the current Chapter Action Log was noted.

 

Safeguarding

The Dean provided a verbal update to Chapter who were informed that there is a regular meeting in the diary for Dean Abi, the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor, the Chapter Safeguarding Lead and the Chief Operating Officer to review safeguarding concerns and processes. Ongoing day to day issues are being handled well. Chaplaincy reporting plus general reporting maintains consistency and coverage.

 

Finance

The Cathedral Treasurer gave a brief update on the Cathedral’s current financial position and reviewed the July Management Accounts for Chapter and the Enterprise Business.  A discussion was had around the Events income which is on track for 2023 and about the possible use of current meeting rooms for office space given the constraints of space.  It was agreed that the impact on income generation and the community use of the rooms would need to be considered before any repurposing. Chapter were informed that the Cathedral Architect has started to help identify where work on possible changes to the office layout could be made.  The space outside the Burgesses Corridor and Old St George’s Chapel are to be considered for potential better use.

 

Chapter were informed that a new financial plan is being created with the Director of Music.

 

 

Recruitment and Staffing Updates

The new Director of Music and Schools Singing Programme, and the new Cathedral Organist and Director of Keyboard Studies have recently been welcomed at a commissioning service. Chapter were informed that the induction process is being reviewed following issues with IT in these new starts.  The Cathedral’s new Ministry Experience Intern has moved into the basement at the Deanery and the new Canon Missioner and family have moved into their house.  Chapter were informed that the Digital Communications Assistant has resigned and a more senior marketing role may be considered in future.

 

Chapter were given information about the restructure impacting some staff currently.

 

Peer Review

The upcoming Peer Review was previewed with Chapter and it was noted that strategic planning is still needed and that getting a date for this to take place is important.

 

Cathedrals Measure

Chapter were updated about the status of the Cathedral application and the current work being done with solicitors and the Church Commissioners around our new Constitution and Statutes.

 

Fabric Advisory Committee (FAC)

The profile of a new FAC member was discussed and agreed to be put forward for membership.

 

AOB

Chapter discussed the current position with regards clergy housing and the need to address the management of this. Chapter were also made aware of the damage to four of the stained glass windows and it was noted that FAC are advising on the work that is needed to restore them.
