Statement

The Observatory Sheffield

Following the Government’s press conference on 16 March 2020 at 5.15pm Sheffield Cathedral took the difficult decision to close ‘The Observatory’ event. We thank the many people who have given us messages of support and encouragement at this difficult time.

We thank all of our volunteers who freely give of their time to the Cathedral. As a charitable organisation we rely on events such as these and the proceeds from ‘The Observatory’ event to support the work of the Cathedral and its community in all of its aspects.

Whilst ticket holders are all entitled to a refund for cancelled performances the financial toll of refunding these tickets will impact the Cathedral and those whom we support. If you feel able to donate the cost of your ticket, we would be grateful for your support.

For refunds please email arts@sheffield-cathedral.org.uk by 31 March along with your booking reference number.

Are you ready to explore space?

Join us for a walking journey through time and space, and see Sheffield Cathedral transformed through sound and light to reveal the universe, galaxies and meteor showers.

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, our second light and sound spectacular is taking place 13-20 March 2020.

After the success of ‘The Angels are Coming’ we’re thrilled to welcome back award-winning artistic collaboration Luxmuralis to Sheffield Cathedral. ‘The Observatory’ will take you back to the first moon landing and let you walk amongst the stars and galaxies.

The light show is inside-only and you’re welcome to stay as long as you like, but we recommend setting aside 1 hour to walk around at your own pace.

Doors open at 6:40pm with new entry slots every 20 minutes and the last entry slot at 9pm.

Praise for ‘The Angels are Coming’ at Sheffield Cathedral

Honestly the best thing I’ve ever seen
Angels light show at Sheffield Cathedral - joyful, beautiful, spiritual.
The Angels are Coming was an amazing experience!

Collaboration with Luxmuralis

‘The Observatory’ is being brought to Sheffield Cathedral by award-winning artistic collaboration Luxmuralis. Previous work by Luxmuralis include Sheffield Cathedral’s 2019 Christmas experience ‘The Angels are Coming’ as well as imaginative light projections in Germany, Italy and the UK.

We’ve been overwhelmed by the wonderful response to ‘The Angels are Coming’. There is a real buzz of excitement in the air! We are very much looking forward to welcoming the people of Sheffield and those who have travelled from further afield back to the Cathedral in March 2020 for The Observatory which promises to be out of this world!
